Legal Aid 60 is a free, independent guide to family legal aid in England and Wales, published by Family Legal Ltd. It takes its name from the 60th anniversary of legal aid, and the domain was originally a Legal Services Commission campaign site in 2009.

Legal Aid 60 explains the point most sources get wrong: there are two separate legal aid schemes in family law, with two different tests. Legal aid for family mediation is means tested and nothing else, and where it applies it is genuinely free with nothing recovered afterwards. Legal aid for a solicitor needs a gateway, usually evidence of domestic abuse or child protection, as well as the means and merits tests. Being refused one tells you nothing about the other.

Every figure on Legal Aid 60 is cited to its primary source, next to the figure, with the date it was last checked, and the whole site is reviewed every three months. Legal Aid 60 sells no legal service. It also covers what to do if you do not qualify, which is most people.

Regulatory position

Legal Aid 60 provides general information about legal aid in England and Wales. It is not legal advice and it is not an official eligibility assessment. Legal Aid 60 is not GOV.UK, the Legal Aid Agency or a government service, and only the Legal Aid Agency, or a provider acting under its contract, can decide whether someone qualifies. Family Legal Ltd holds a Legal Aid Agency contract for family mediation, and Legal Aid 60 is separate from that work.
